Nicolas Maillart

Nicolas Maillart is one of the most innovative winemakers of his generation. Since taking over the family business, he has never stopped redesigning his vineyard approach, whether it's converting vines to organic farming or reintroducing Petit Mellier, a local grape variety that has mostly disappeared.

The history of this family estate dates back to 1753, when the name of the wine grower from the Maillart family first appeared. Since then, generations have been patiently changing each other, and today the 9th generation is managing the estate.

IN 2003, NICOLAS, AN ENGINEER AND OENOLOGIST, RETURNED TO THE ESTATE, PERFORMING ALMOST 300 YEARS OF TRADITION.

Today, the House's vineyard extends over 15 hectares, exclusively in Montaigne de Reims. Nicolas Maillart is dominated primarily by Pinot Noir, as it alone occupies 65% of the hillsides. We also find the traditional grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, as well as a grape variety that has become extremely rare in Champagne, Petit Mellier. It was on the initiative of Nicolas Maillart that this local Champagne grape returned to the estate's vineyards. The reintroduction of this unproductive but uniquely fragrant vine is the result of many years of work by Nicholas, who was able to select the most favorable sites.

The work at the winery deserves special attention. All grapes are vinified separately to express the originality of each terroir. The search for the right maturity at the time of harvest, the controlled yield, the origin of the grapes, allow Nicolas Maillart to produce wines with a strong personality.
